How to protect stainless steel items from corrosion and keep them in perfect condition?

Stainless steel is a popular material used in the production of appliances, kitchen utensils, cookware, and many other products. It is valued for its resistance to corrosion and its elegant, shiny appearance. Although it is extremely durable, this doesn’t mean it’s completely indestructible. To keep stainless steel looking great for a long time, it’s important to take proper care of it. And we know how to do it.

What is stainless steel?

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron, carbon, chromium, and other elements. Chromium reacts with oxygen in the environment to create a thin layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the stainless steel, protecting it from corrosion. Stainless steel can also contain other elements such as nickel, molybdenum, or titanium, which enhance its properties—improving resistance to acids, increasing strength, or enhancing its aesthetic appearance.

There are several types of stainless steel, but they all share one common trait: when properly maintained, they have an exceptionally long lifespan and retain their aesthetic appearance. And that’s exactly what you need in the food service industry.

How to make stainless steel last as long as possible:

  1. Regular cleaning – Although stainless steel is resistant to corrosion, it still needs to be cleaned regularly. Dust, grease, or food residues can compromise the protective layer of chromium oxide and cause unwanted damage. Clean it at least once a week with a soft cloth dipped in water with mild soap.
  2. Use gentle cleaning products – For daily cleaning, a mixture of water and mild soap is enough. For more stubborn stains, you can use special cleaning products designed specifically for stainless steel. These products not only clean but often restore shine and renew the protective layer on the surface.
  3. Always clean in the direction of the grain – If the stainless steel has fine surface lines (typical for kitchen appliances), it’s important to clean it in the direction of these lines. Circular motions could scratch the surface and leave unsightly streaks.
  4. Dry the surface – After each cleaning, dry the stainless steel with a clean, dry cloth. This will prevent water spots and mineral deposits, which could damage the surface.
  5. Use special protective products – There are protective sprays or oils available on the market that seal the surface of stainless steel, protecting it from dirt and fingerprints. These products also help preserve its shine.

What to avoid:

  • Don’t use harsh cleaning products – Cleaning agents containing chlorine, bleach, or abrasive sponges can damage the protective layer of stainless steel and cause corrosion. These products are too aggressive for stainless steel and can leave scratches.
  • Don’t expose stainless steel to prolonged moisture – Although stainless steel is resistant to moisture, long-term exposure to water or a humid environment can lead to the formation of limescale or stains. Always dry the stainless steel after contact with water.
  • Avoid contact with other metals – When handling stainless steel items, try to avoid contact with other metals, especially iron or regular steel. Friction between different metals can lead to damage to the stainless steel or accelerate corrosion.
  • Don’t expose stainless steel to aggressive chemicals – Salt, acids, or harsh cleaning products can destroy the protective layer of chromium oxide. If such substances come into contact with stainless steel, rinse it thoroughly with water and dry immediately.

What cleaning products to use on stainless steel?

Recommended cleaning products:

  • Mild soaps are great for regular, everyday cleaning.
  • Special stainless steel cleaners provide deeper cleaning and restore shine.
  • Microfiber cloths won’t scratch the surface.
  • White vinegar mixed with water is an excellent solution for removing water stains.
  • Protective sprays and oils serve to renew the protective layer and highlight the shine.

Cleaning products to avoid:

  • Bleach contains chlorine, which can severely damage the surface.
  • Abrasive cleaning products leave scratches.
  • Steel wool pads can permanently damage stainless steel.

Proper care of stainless steel will ensure that your appliances and cookware look like new for many years. The key to success is regular cleaning with gentle products, using the right maintenance techniques, and avoiding aggressive cleaning agents. If you follow these guidelines, stainless steel appliances will reward you with long-lasting durability and a radiant appearance.
